The Word "Bespoke"
Lately, I've been seeing the word "Bespoke" every where in reference to clothing. It is of British origin. The pronunciation and modern definition is - [bi-spohk] (of clothes) made to individual order; custom-made: a bespoke jacket.
A number of made to order shops are springing up U.S. including the word in their names. Perhaps, this trend is that Americans are swaying more so toward European designs and cuts. Or maybe it's just the fact that we want clothes that are made to order and not mass merchandised by Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Avenue or Barneys. I must admit, that I'd like to have a wardrobe full of made to fit E. Delon Claiborne clothing. I think it offers us all a chance to show our indivduality.
Not only are boutiques catering to the tailor made crowd, but look at Nike. They have been allowing people to "design" sneakers online by choosing the color of the shoe, the Swoosh and shoe laces. I've seen sweatshirts that display a designer's name and are made to order and antique watches that are refurbished and engraved with unique designs and phrases.
So, I say go forth and get a Bespoke wardrobe. Men should be more creative in their fashion and clean up their acts. Say no to untucked long sleeve shirts with a blazer. Say no to wearing sneakers to an upscale club. Clothes don't make the man, but a tailored suit would sure make him look good.
